Since falling off my bicycle last week - ouch it was sore (the back of my arm still looks like roadkill) - my neck and lower back have been stiff and sore. Not wanting to let any appointments interfere with beach going time, I postponed my appointment for treatment until the weather cooled down a bit. I have continued to run and cycle, although uncomfortable, but not quite as uncomfortable as an hour of needles in my back!

| The Care Clinic, Ryde |
I went to my absolute favourite person for sorting out sports injuries, "Dr Martin" at the Care Clinic in Ryde. He is a qualified Osteopath and Chiropractor and combines his treatment with acupuncture and is a sportsman himself. He fixed my knee earlier in the year just by clicking an errant bone back into place. For 3 months I had gone from physiotherapist to physiotherapist unable to sort out the problem. All claimed that I had an ITB issue or that I was running incorrectly and needed to cut back, not what I wanted to hear. I would definitely recommend going to the Care Clinic for sports injuries if you are in Sydney (or seeking a similar type of treatment elsewhere if you are not). And no, this post is not sponsored!
While lying on my front, with what felt like a million needles in my back, but most probably only in the region of 10-15 I had plenty of time to contemplate life... maybe next time I'll download a meditation exercise on my iPod and listen to that while I relax. No, I couldn't even play on my phone as any movement was impossible! Relax, relax, learn to relax......I was there for about an hour and after a couple of huge clicks in my back and neck I am feeling like a new person. Ready to run fast again!
Before leaving I couldn't resist perusing the health store at the front of the clinic. I am very fussy when it comes to deodorants and avoid all with parabens and aluminium. You won't find me wearing an anti perspirant, I am of the opinion that a bit of sweat is good and I am not prepared to compromise my health to in order to mask natural odours. I am forever trying out new "healthy" deodorants (and maybe I do smell a bit on a hot day!). The one I bought today is Magnesium Deororant by Nasanta . Magnesium neutralises body door and is gentle on the skin. It seems to be working, but then it's a pretty cool day. I'll have to do a product review under more extreme conditions!
My other purchase was a bag of xylitol. I consider it the ultimate sugar substitute. It has a low GI and believe it or not, according to my dentist, it is actually GOOD for your teeth. It coats them with a protective substance and so fights cavities. Unfortunately, quite expensive (about $12,50 for 500g) so we use it sparingly. The kids love it on their porridge and I use it in baking too. Just be aware that it is deadly to dogs.

| Xylitol |
Do you go the alternative route when treating running/sports injuries? Have you been for acupuncture?
Have you tried/ heard of xylitol?
Would you recommend a "healthy" deodorant?

Hope you get better soon. I have had acupuncture but not for a sports injury. Hope it helps
ReplyDeleteIt really helps - would definitely recommend it for a sports injury:)
DeleteOh my goodness, I am SO on the same page as you when it comes to chiropractors. I spent countless hours in physio for knee issues, with therapists insisting that I had to stop all activity and stay off of it. Eventually I went to a chiropractor who manaaged to fix it up in 2 treatments by clicking some bones back into place. I would be hard pressed to go back for physio - chiropractor/sports therapy is definitely my treatment of choice too!!! :) :)
ReplyDeleteWow, so many more runners with knee problems should definitely try the chiro route- nice to be on the same page:)
DeleteI haven't used xylitol, but I want to give it a shot. At the moment I love agave and coconut sugar.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you've had such a rough time. But, I am thrilled to hear that you have someone you trust to treat you. I'm over the physio, I always thought they were the way to go, but they only seem to look at one part of any problem.
Much love!
You should definitely try xylitol:) I am definitely over physios too, always take WAY too long to sort out the problem and it never actually gets sorted - a quick click works for me!
ReplyDeleteIt's weird, I'm not a xylitol fan - upsets my tummy. Physios - there are good and bad and there are some awful chiros around too. Luckily mine is one of the best in Australia where it comes to my particular issue and I've learned so much x
ReplyDeleteI've ben doing some reading about xylitol - see Tim's link below and am now thinking twice about it! Although there are always many sides to every argument:)
DeletePersonally I wouldn't trust xylitol - I'd rather eat natural foods. Have a read here. http://www.crunchybetty.com/xylitol-should-we-stop-calling-it-natural
ReplyDeleteI'll check it out:)
ReplyDeleteDo you know why it's lethal for dogs?! Ahh!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your injuries- no fun.
